(…) Hernan Orbea, architect and profesor at PUCE, insists that parks should not be dedicated exclusively to sports and recreation, as people also wish to relax and meditate in comfortable and open spaces.

Guayasamin agrees that city planning should include places for nothing other than resting, “where one can read a book without getting hit by a ball”.  He believes that there are such places in the park La Carolina, but these have decreased in number.

Respondents brought a debate to the table, agreeing that the “Centro de Exposiciones Quito” should find a new venue, especially now that the “Centro de Convenciones Bicentenario” is in the works.  Carrion expressed that this infrastructure should have been removed long ago, after the “Mitad del Mundo” was dedicated to this kind of activity.  “It should be removed and reclaim the open, green spaces”.

Orbea suggests that, in place of the “Centro de Exposiciones” should go a space dedicated to art and culture.  Guayasamin, on the other hand, puts forth that the shopping mall at the far north of the park would be a more appropriate space to showcase cultural work.
